NEW JERSEY COLLEGE BOUND GRANT PROGRAMS
The College Bound Grant Program, established in 1986, addresses the educational needs and aspirations of at-risk youth in grades 6-12 in Abbott School Districts. The grant supports pre-college educational enrichment activities to help ensure completion of secondary school; to increase college admission, retention, and graduation rates of these students; and to encourage the successful pursuit of postsecondary education in the sciences, mathematics, or technology. For fiscal 2011, the amount of the College Bound Grant allocation was reduced in the state budget to $1.7 million from $3.55 million the previous year. The decrease in the allocation amount limits the number of programs that can receive awards. Based on the amount and federal matching requirements, the Commission continued funding for only the five programs that are part of the State GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program), a federal initiative. For fiscal 2011, these five programs anticipate serving almost 2,000 students.
